Street Fighter x Mega Man is a thing, a thing that is real

…….Have you found your eyeballs yet? Okay then, cool, let’s chat. I…don’t know how I feel about this to be honest. The loving trolling of the fans at the beginning is cute, but it’s kinda like if I walked into your house, kicked your cat, threw your birthday cake on the floor, showed you a couple of really cool presents that I bought you, presents that are, dare I say, of legendary universal proportions (see what I did there?), then set fire to them and called you a twit for crying. I then continued to make fun of you off and on for a year and some months, and then showed up with a super cool present for you with a card teasing you about being raw from before.

Also, PC?

Okay, let’s play both sides of the field here. First and foremost, I’m gonna be that guy and say that this whole thing feels almost too little too late, but only because of the strange platform choice. PC is much easier to dev on to be sure, but I’m just not really seeing the logic. It’s sort of like when the Artorias of the Abyss DLC for Dark Souls was PC exclusive for months on end, while the Prepare to Die edition only came out in Europe on disc for consoles. I just…I’m like…

Especially considering that the American fan base pretty much made this franchise what it is today, you know, what with importing the Japanese copy like mad…then importing the Korean copy like mad…then importing the Hong Kong release like mad…then buying the living daylights out of it all over again when it came to America…

I mean, come on, stereotypically Xbox 360 gamers tend to mostly play shooters and sports games, and even they wanted it badly enough to warrant a 360 release of Dark Souls! TWICE!!!

But, getting back on topic, a PC release seems strange to me. I don’t particularly like gaming on PC if I don’t have too; most of my friends own consoles and more than that I prefer human interaction when I’m gaming rather than having to be tethered to a headset and talk at someone. There’s nothing wrong with online gaming to be sure, but whether those that aren’t gamers admit it or not, it’s a very social hobby. We’re not all scary dudes in our mom’s basement, a lot of us are social butterflies and I prefer couch co-op to online any day. The other reason I don’t like PC gaming is that it’s exceedingly difficult to share that really cool game you got with a friend on PC.

You can’t be like “Dude, you gotta borrow this copy of Asura’s Wrath because vaguely racist ending aside this game was totes sweet!” or  “Dude, you have got to get in on some Ragnarok Odyssey; it’s like Devil May Cry and Monster Hunter had a baby!” with a PC game. It’s more like “Hey dude, come crowd around my already crowded PC space and look at this cool thing you can’t have because your computer struggles to run Microsoft Word on a good day.”

Also, there’s just so many easy to port to platforms that this would make sense to release it on. I’m guessing aside from ease of development the choice of PC was also because pretty much everyone has one, but an Android release would be great since it’s free so the whole “Android people only pirate crap” stigma wouldn’t matter, and an iOS release would be great because A) who doesn’t have an iPhone? Seriously, who? and B) I want this on my iPad dang it!

Also, consoles and portables like the Nintendo eShop and the Vita would be groovy, especially since we can both play nice with cross-play between our handhelds and consoles now. Basically I think it’s a nice gesture, but A) I don’t trust Capcom anywhere near enough to believe this is a revival, and B) it just feels awkward and misguided.

Now…with all that said…….

HOLY FREAKING CRAP DID YOU SEE WHEN ROSE DID THE PSYCHIC THING?! OR THE PART WHERE RYU WAS ALL “HEY GUY, YOU CAN’T STAND ON THAT BUILDING! I’M STANDING ON THAT BUILDING!” OR THE PART WHERE MEGA MAN WAS ALL LIKE “PLASMA CANNON FOR YOUR FACE ROLENTO!” AND THEN HE WAS ALL “I HAVE ROLENTO’S GRENADES SON! RECOGNIZE!” AND THEN HE AND RYU WERE ALL LIKE “DOUBLE HADOKEN!!!” AND THEN HE WAS ALL LIKE “I CAN BLOCK LASERS CUZ I HAVE ROSE’S PARRY NOW!” AND THEN THERE WAS THE MUSIC AND THE 8 BIT AND THE EXPLOSIONS AND THAT PART WHEN THEY DID THE THING WITH THE GUY AND THERE WAS THAT OTHER GUY AND THEN GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So yes, in short, it’s easy to be that guy, and Capcom really deserves you to be that guy, and I would much prefer this on consoles than PC since I know a lot of people that would enjoy this and would also enjoy sharing it with their kids but can’t because PC, howevs…

Seriously, that double hadoken was totes sweet. Leave your comments below, and remember this if nothing else: We’ve gotta be willing to at least meet Capcom halfway here. Games like this are really just big marketing tools in disguise in a poorly executed attempt to gauge fan interest in a franchise. If Capcom sees low downloads and nothing but hate, they will retire Mega Man, and yes, this time it will mostly be our fault. Peace!

  1. Once again a very insightful review. But we know Mega Man would blow them away. I’m just saying…
